This CARESSES Randomised Controlled trial represents the final stage of the three year EU H2020 CARESSES project which aimed to develop and evaluate a culturally competent artificial intelligent system embedded into social robots to support older adult wellbeing. A parallel group, single-blind trial was conducted across older adult care homes in England and Japan with participants (33) randomly allocated to one of three groups, two of which - Experimental Group and Control Group 1 – involved the use of a Pepper robot for up 18 h across 2 weeks. Two versions of the CARESSES artificial intelligence were tested: a fully culturally competent system (Experimental Group) and a more limited version (Control Group 1). Pre- and post- between and within group changes in health-related quality of life (SF-36), loneliness (ULS-8), and perceptions of robotic cultural competence (CCATool-Robotics) were measured. Score difference in SF-36 Emotional Wellbeing between Experimental Group and Care As Usual participants over time was significant (F[1] = 6.614, sig = .019, ηp 2 = .258), as was the comparison between Any Robot used and Care As Usual (F[1] = 5.128, sig = .031, ηp 2 = .146). SF-36 physical health subscales saw no significant change. For ULS-8 loneliness, scores slightly improved but not significantly among Experimental and Control Group 1 participants compared to Care As Usual participants. Overall, the study’s evidence indicates that culturally competent socially assistive robots can contribute towards improving the psychological wellbeing of older adults residing in care settings.

This presentation is focused on the Senior Citizens Housing Model developed by the Good Neighbors’ Mirae Foundation following their research on South Korea’s Baby Boomer generation, the newly elderly generation. Issues regarding South Korea’s care facilities (so called ‘senior town’ in Korean) for the senior citizens are addressed, such as the facility-oriented (rather than residents-oriented) rigid and closed operation, high prices due to the targeting of high-income groups, and a lack of supply. A model for senior citizen’s housing that targets the middle class in preparation for the coming super-aged society is discussed, as well as the role of non-profit organisations.

In South Korea, a rapidly aging society, a new approach to improve the quality of community care for elderly people with dementia and their families is needed, one that embeds cutting-edge technologies. We have established a metaverse environment for playing drums and the marimba based on virtual reality and haptic technology. Currently, it is undergoing a process to elevate its technological level of completion through pilot tests and usability studies. We expect to develop a musical activity programme which could stimulate the senses of vision and touch to an equivalent level as physical exercise, as well as providing positive effects on patient’s depression and cognitive skills.

This presentation is based on the findings of the first international group singing study involving older adults from South Korea, Australia and UK, who live with Parkinson’s. “Sing to Beat Parkinson’s”, a group singing intervention, was first developed in the UK to support older adults with Parkinson’s. In this study, participants in three countries took part in the weekly group singing sessions for six months. We assessed the effects of the singing intervention using Parkinson’s Quality of Life measure (PDQ39) and mental health assessment (DASS). The findings show that South Korean participants experienced much improved social support compared with Australian and UK participants. Additionally, stigma, anxiety and stress scores were significantly reduced in all three countries. Therefore, we discuss that group singing can be an important intervention for supporting older adults living with Parkinson’s in both South Korea and UK.
